The general objective of this study is to determine the relationship between motivation and academic performance of high school students in an educational institution in Villa María del Triunfo. It is a basic, quantitative, non-experimental, cross-sectional and correlational research. The sampling was non-probabilistic by convenience and the sample consisted of 64 students from first to fifth year of high school. The Academic Motivation Scale adapted by Remón and the grade register were used as instruments to establish the academic performance of the students. The results showed that 71.9% of the students presented a high level of academic motivation, and that there are students with poor academic performance, however, the most common grade was 11. It is concluded that there is a direct and weak relationship between motivation and academic performance, intrinsic and extrinsic motivation are not related to academic performance and that motivation presents an inverse relationship with academic performance in high school students of an Educational Institution of Villa María del Triunfo.
