Coronavirus disease (COVID-19) is caused by the SARS-CoV-2 virus, which is a member of the coronavirus family and is spread through interaction between its spike protein and ACE2 receptors in the human body. The first cases of COVID-19 were reported in December 2019 in Wuhan, China. The World Health Organization declared an international public health emergency in January 2020 and since then, America has been one of the most affected continents, with close to 80 million cases. Peru is one of the 6 Latin American countries with the highest number of infections, with more than 2 million cases as of September 2021. The symptoms of COVID-19 vary from person to person, but can range from mild to severe and can include fatigue , difficulty thinking or strengthening, headache, loss of taste or smell, dizziness, palpitations, dyspnea, cough, muscle or joint pain, anxiety or depression, fever, and worsening of symptoms with exercise. Many COVID-19 survivors require long-term support due to functional or mental health impairments. The prevalence of recovered cases of COVID-19 with persistent symptoms or functional limitations is variable, with studies ranging from 80% in Egypt to 40% in the US. There are still debates about how healthcare professionals should manage the post COVID-19 syndrome and it is essential to monitor the progression of symptoms and their impact on the functional status of affected patients.
