Objective: To describe the experiences of stigma and discrimination among people living with HIV who are treated at a health center in Lima Norte. Material and method: The research had a qualitative approach, because it focuses on the study of the meanings of patients with HIV. The design used was qualitative description, since verbal data extracted from the interviewees were described, synthesized and interpreted. The data collection technique was the semi-structured interview, which was designed by the authors and validated by our expert juries. Results: From the experiences of stigmatization and discrimination, 5 subcategories were generated: in the subcategory experiences about self-stigma, the interviewees expressed responsibility, shame and guilt; In the subcategory experiences about social stigma, they expressed being seen in a bad way due to beliefs and prejudices; In the subcategory experiences regarding discrimination in the workplace, they expressed the presence of rejection, salary inequality, and disclosure of their diagnosis; In the subcategory experiences about discrimination in the health service, they expressed being treated negatively and being psychologically abused, and in the subcategory experiences about discrimination in the family environment, the interviewees expressed being isolated from family gatherings and lunches. Conclusions: Stigma and discrimination are closely linked, that is, discrimination represents an important barrier that negatively impacts the sphere of life of patients with HIV, generated by self-stigma, social stigma and prejudices present in society.
