Refineries play a crucial role in the transformation of crude oil into refined products, fuel production, and power generation. They also play an important role in the production of petrochemical products, which are used as raw materials in the manufacture of plastics, synthetic fibers, rubber, detergents, fertilizers, medicines, and a wide range of derivatives. Refineries require a significant amount of electrical power to operate efficiently and continuously. The electrical substations ensure a reliable power supply to the different process units. In addition, they make it possible to manage the refinery's electrical demand, distribute power, balance the electrical load, and prevent overloads or voltage drops. The electrical substations have protection equipment, which can de-energize a unit in the event of a fault or anomalous event detected, such electrical trips generate unavailability of the substation and therefore unscheduled stops in the refinery processes. That is why having a monitoring and control system is of vital importance, because it allows you to constantly monitor the status of the equipment and electrical variables; facilitates diagnosis of a potential electrical trip, allows remote monitoring, and reduces costs associated with physical site visits. In addition, the data collected can identify patterns that indicate the health of the equipment. All these benefits help improve the availability of electrical substations, reducing downtime, as well as response times.
