The present research work carried out a comparison between the carbothermal reduction of steel casting scale produced in the heat treatment using anthracite and charcoal. The work methodology was to collect, homogenize and mechanically prepare steel scale samples from MEFICO SRL, as well as two types of coals: anthracite and charcoal. Then, chemical analysis, XRD, FTIR, SEM and some physical determinations were carried out, such as: granulometric analysis, real and apparent density and cubing of only the steel husk samples. The coals were thermally analyzed (immediate carbon analysis (proximate analysis) and reactivity to carbon dioxide). A design of experiments was established using the 23 factorial method, to interpret the linear, two- and three-term interactions of the factors: weight of steel pieces husks between the weight of coals: anthracitic and charcoal (WCA/Wca and WCA/WCV); temperature and time of carbothermal reduction on %Carbothermal reduction using the statistical program MINITAB version 2021, to finally estimate kinetic parameters of carbothermal reduction using the classical iron ore reduction models (MRQI(se), MRQI (sc) and MNA (n/p)). The steel scales from the manganese steel manufacturing of MEFICO SRL, contain iron (Fe) 74.85%, and manganese (Mn) 11.69%. This iron is in the form of wustite (FeO), 65.18%; followed by chromium manganese oxide or manganese chromate (MnCr2O4) with 21.11% and manganese sulfate (MnSO4) with 4.96%. On the other hand, the reducing agents: anthracitic and vegetable coal showed reactivities against carbon dioxide of 91 and 96 %, respectively, likewise, vegetable coal (CV) presented a higher content of fixed carbon, lower ash content and higher % of volatile matter compared to anthracitic coal (ca), which made this comparative study of carbothermal reduction of steel scale viable. For the carbothermal reduction of steel scale using anthracite coal, a maximum reduction percentage of 64% was obtained for WCA/Wca equal to 0.33, at 1100°C and 60 min. The interactions of the linear factors on the %Red, a, are: A: WA/Wca resulted negative and insignificant, as for the positive effects: (B) Temperature, K, this had a positive and very high or significant contribution and (C) Time, min (1.5) was the least significant. This analysis could be organized as follows: B >>>> C > A. The best kinetic parameter estimation model for this process was the MRQI (sc) obtaining an Ea and A equal to 38.82 kJ/mol and 2.97 mHz respectively, and a linear correlation (R2) of 0.9999. In the case of the carbothermal reduction of steel scale using charcoal a maximum reduction percentage was reached at 72.51%, for WCA/WCV equal to 0.33, at 1100°C and 60 min. The linear interactions of the three factors on the %Red, a, were described as follows. A: WA/WCV which was negative, as for the positive effects, C: Time, min, this had a positive and high contribution, and B: Temperature, K was the least significant. This analysis can be summarized as follows: C > B > A. The best kinetic parameter estimation model for this process was the MNA (n/p) obtaining an equal Ea and A 28.89 kJ/mol and 5.54 mHz respectively and a linear correlation (R2) of 0.9927. Also, it could be verified that, at higher temperature and reduction time, both the % Reduction (a) and the reaction rate also increase, while the WCA/Wca and WCA/WCV have an inverse relationship.
