This thesis evaluates the influence of wood density on backwater rise due to wood accumulation, taking as reference previous studies about wood transport and hazards evaluations in hydraulic structures due to wood accumulations. Wood transport originates from the following processes: landslides, riverbank erosion and large floods with congested or semi-congested wood transport. Congested transportation has greater relevance in hazard analysis. In Peru, evidence of wood accumulations is found in river ports and hydroelectric dams. The buoyancy of the log is determined by its density, species and state of decomposition and influences the shape of the accumulation, which can alter the compactness of the cumulus and the water that passes through it. Recent investigations have found two types of parameters in the influence of the backwater rise due wood accumulation: parameters associated with flow conditions and parameters associated with the characteristics of wood accumulations. The purpose of this research was to analyze the influence of wood density in an accumulation upstream of a retention grid, to achieve this, a series of flume experiments were carried out at the National Hydraulic Laboratory through a natural wood accumulation model composed of a variable slope channel, a retention grid and artificial logs manufactured in 3D printers. Twenty scenarios were evaluated, including different 04 densities and 05 Froude numbers. The main contribution of this research is to demonstrate the increase in the backwater effect with rising the density of the floating material, in addition, a modified equation that depends on the wood density is proposed to estimate the increase in backwater rise. Other important findings showed that accumulations have more compactness with rising wood density. At the end of the document, a list of recommendations and possible topics is proposed to improve future flume experiments and contribute to the study of wood transport in rivers.
