The smart metering system is of increasing interest in the electricity sub-sector, due to the economic and control benefits of the system. However, the replacement of the conventional metering system by the smart metering system presents difficulties in strategic planning and commercialization. The research is framed in studying the strategies used for the replacement of the conventional energy metering system to a smart metering system, in a gradual way, in order to maximize the Net Present Value (NPV) of the companies of the electricity subsector. The proposed mathematical optimization model supports the decision-making process with associated costs, considering the timing of the gradual replacement. Therefore, an optimization methodology for NPV maximization is used for smart metering system projects.
