A mining unit in Peru has projected a future tailings facility at 22 km from the concentrator plant, therefore it is required to design a new transport system for the copper-zinc tailings slurry. The definition of the main components of the tailings transport system at the early engineering stages will define the feasibility and continuity of the project. The design of a slurry transport system needs the estimation of pressure losses, which is complicated because of different variable slurry characteristics (velocity, solids concentration, particle size, etc.). In the research thesis, pressure losses were estimated by computational fluid dynamic (CFD) simulations and the effects on the design of a transport system were analyzed. Through the analysis of the results obtained in the Ansys Fluent software, it was defined that the granular Eulerian model shows a better precision than the granular mixture model. In addition, it was confirmed that a design of the tailings transport system using CFD simulations optimizes the pumping capacity and the required power of the system.
