This thesis work develops and validates a methodology for the simulation of fluid behaviour in Lab-On-a-Chip (LOC) device structures for microfluidics using the open source computational package OpenFOAM by means of a script based on the SIMPLE method. The CAD design of two LOC devices for microfluidics was carried out. The first LOC has a simple structure mixer with a cross-sectional area of 0.375 mm2 and the second one is a chaotic mixer with a similar area to the previous one. To validate the simulation, the LOC devices were fabricated by printing the designs with an Anycubic Photon 2k LCD photolithographic 3D printer. In addition, a flow control unit was developed using a microcontroller and an image acquisition unit to experimentally characterise the mixture in the LOC devices. Flows of 0.025 mm/s, 0.050 mm/s and 0.075 mm/s were injected both in the OpenFOAM simulation and in the real devices. Through digital image processing, the standard deviation was calculated in MATLAB and Python to find a correlation in the mixture. It was found that for all flows, the chaotic mixer structure allowed a total mixing of the two input liquids within the LOC. And in the mixer with simple structure only partial mixing was obtained, observing laminar flow up to the exit of the structure.
