Currently, in the Peruvian mining industry there is the problem of improving processes in search of better efficiency; therefore, one of the most critical and important stages is the concentration of minerals through the use of flotation cells. In this sense, due to the lower cost of operation, less space occupation and substantial reduction of energy, column-type flotation cells are increasingly being adopted in modern mining; therefore, the development of a controller that automates said cell is a complex task; because the dynamics of the process of the column type flotation cell presents dead times, coupling of variables and restrictions in the process. The advanced multivariable optimal control MPC (Model Predictive Control) is capable of operating with restrictions on the variables and dead times in the process, as well as operating with systems with coupled variables as in the case of MIMO systems (Multiple-input Multiple-output). Therefore, in this thesis, the Multivariate Generalized Predictive Control (GPC) strategy is used to design the controller, where the controlled hydrodynamic variables (volumetric fraction of washing water and volumetric fraction of air retained in the column) are manipulated by the air flow rate and the washing water flow rate, respectively.
