The standard procedure for the liquefaction triggering assessment of fines- dominated leached ore is conducted, in a first stage of analysis, according to the classical cyclic stress approach under the precepts of the simplified method currently accepted in the state of the practice. For this purpose, it is possible to use different in situ field investigations, from which the SCPTu is preferred, to estimate the ore’s CRR. SCPTu allows the measurement of 7 in situ parameters that can further be used to obtain the Vs, u0 and Qtn,cs, which are indices of the performance of the leached ore at small and large strains, respectively. While calculating the CRR of the leached ore under the Vs and cone approaches, an apparent divergence in their estimates is obtained and doubts arise as to which is the one reliable, which in many cases results in the selection of the cone approach solely since lower CRR estimations can be obtained, leaving aside the VS which is perhaps the most important parameter in soil dynamics. However, in a heap leach, the direct application of the cone approach can underestimate the CRR by far, especially if the VS indicates that there is a high stiffness that contrasts with the apparent brittleness captured by the Qtn cs. This research has explored the advantages of the use of VS, without disregarding the Qtn,cs, through the use of the KG index to quantitatively assess the microstructure of leached ore and that, together with one of the foundations of the cyclic strain theory — the 𝛾𝑡ℎ below which it is not possible to induce pore pressure build up — contributes in the redefinition of the standard liquefaction triggering curve, maintaining the classical cyclic-stress approach and linking it to a parameter that is directly related to the physical aspect of the liquefaction phenomenon, which is the sudden increase of pore pressures in equilibrium. The assessment based on the coupled cyclic-stress and cyclic-shear approach indicates that leached ore with high KG indices exhibit higher liquefaction resistance at low levels of cyclic stresses, related to a 100-year return period event, for heap leach pads with a short exposure period (≤10 years), or intermediate stages of temporary nature rated as low by consequence classification, than that based on the Qtn,cs correlations for Holocene sands. The results obtained also allow to estimate which seismic event would trigger flow or cylic liquefaction according to the particular aspects of leached ore, quantified based on the KG, and in the return period of the design event, to adapt the scope of the simplified method for its use in a preliminary or first-screening risk analysis to identify which are the layers of greatest interest that should be studied based on special laboratory testing on the specific layers that retain solution, which are in a contractive state, and which would lose the effects of the microstructure in the estimation of its CRR in the event of the occurrence of an earthquake of greater magnitude than that estimated. Under the proposed methodology for the evaluation of the liquefaction potential, it is possible to avoid the conservatism of the simplified method while exploring the potential of the cyclic strain theory in its application to the heap leach pads assessment which have the presence of fines-dominated leached ore as one of the most common problems in current practice.
