The mineral extraction process in open pit mines requires pumping systems to depreciate the water table, and not delay the mining plans due to the presence of surface water. The pumping systems move, the underground water, out of the pit to the collection ponds, through some re-pumping stations or intermediate ponds. The operation of the pumps, in the case of the re-pumping stations, doesn’t consider the supply flow, and operates with a flow higher than necessary, which generates high energy consumption and an additional operation’s cost. The purpose of this research work comprises the design of an automatic control system for submersible pumps in a re-pumping pond, which regulates the capacity of the pumps, considering the supply flow, with the objective of improving the energy consumption of the submersible pumps. Firstly, the information is collected from the pumping and instrumentation equipment that comprises the impulsion system in the intermediate pond; then, the system’s mathematical model is formulated and the control’s variable and the relationship with energy consumption are established. Next, the control loop is designed and the controller gains are established based on the mathematical model.
