In hydrocarbon storage and supply plants, the fire-fighting system is designed to prevent and control a fire. The operation of these systems is affected by lack of water supply; which results in catastrophic consequences, because they present a greater probability of explosions due to existing volatile substances, which often results in greater risk for being in remote places, such as the Jungle region of Peru. To minimize the existing problem in the hydrocarbon storage plants due to the lack of water supply, a proposal was made to improve the water supply, which consists of a new pumping system that transports water from an underground reserve tank with similar dimensions of the supply tank of the fire-fighting system, with the aim of increasing the operating time of the system. By collecting technical data from the firefighting pumping system, the main tank of the firefighting system and the reserve tank, the trajectory of the pipes for the new pumping system that will transport water from the reserve tank to the supply tank was analyzed. Based on the theory of fluid mechanics, to obtain the TDA (total dynamic head) the energy equation was used, the static head was obtained through the difference in level between both tanks, however, this turned out to be variable; for the friction loss, the friction coefficient was obtained through the Colebrook equation, the Excel program was used iterating the friction factor (f) to obtain the losses in the pipeline trajectory, also considering the losses due to the accessories; As a result, two curves of the system were obtained by the variation of the static load, considering the flow equal to that of the fire pump. In a selection program, Grundfos Product Center, a submersible pump was selected with an electric motor that intersects the pump curve with the system curves, the initial operating point is flow rate de 567.8 𝑚3/ℎ (2500 gpm) and an ADT of 9 m.c.a., as the water level in the reserve tank decreases, the pump will operate in a flow rate operating range of 454.3 𝑚3/ℎ - 567.8 𝑚3/ℎ (2000 gpm – 2500 gpm) and an ADT range of 9 m.c.a. – 14 m.c.a. In the control of the new pumping system, level sensors were used in the water supply tanks to start or end its operation. Based on the analysis of the proposal, the fire-fighting pumping system has a volumetric water capacity of 4,260.5 𝑚3 and will operate for a total time of 450 minutes. It was concluded in the research work that through the new pumping system there is an increase in water capacity and operating time of 106.4%.
