Seismic isolation systems have become a promising alternative for earthquake resistant design of bridges. Its main purpose is to move the fundamental frequency of a structure away from the prevailing high energy frequencies of a seismic movement, as a result reduced forces are transmitted to the substructure. Additionally, seismic isolators are also capable of providing energy dissipation in order to reduce accelerations transmitted to the superstructure. Currently, the two most used types of isolators are elastomeric and sliding frictional. The Lead Rubber Bearing (LRB) isolator and the Sliding Triple Friction Pendulum (TFP) isolator were the two types of isolators selected in this research work. To better understand the behavior of the two isolators, a study of the hysterical models adopted to describe their cyclical response was first carried out. In the case of the LRB, a model capable of describing the resistance degradation due to heating of the lead core and a simple bilinear model were considered. In the case of the TFP isolator, a series and a parallel model were adopted. To validate the models, a comparison was made with quasi-static cylic and dynamic tests. Subsequently, the seismic response of a critical isolated continuous deck bridge with LRB and TFP was analyzed. In the design of these isolators, it was considered that the isolated period, the post-yield stiffness and the yield strength are similar, in order to be able to compare the unique effects of each isolator in the analyzed bridge. In the study of the seismic response of the isolated bridge, a series of nonlinear dynamic analyzes was carried out, considering the two horizontal components of seven seismic records. In these analyzes, the lower and upper limits of the properties of each isolator were considered, with the aim of obtaining the maximum values in terms of displacements and forces developed in the isolators. From the results obtained, it is concluded that the system with LRB is capable of providing more uniform responses and lower seismic demands on the substructure, however, it induces greater displacements in the isolators compared to the TFP system.
