Currently, the Peruvian earthquake-resistant standard gives us certain technical recommendations to follow, in order to have a structure with good seismic behavior during its useful life. However, there are different structural phenomena, products of the dynamic behavior of a structure in the event of an earthquake, which are not considered in the standards, one of these being the “pounding” effect between adjacent structures. Even though the current standard gives us certain recommendations that would avoid this effect, the evaluation of this phenomenon is not explicitly included as a recommendation. This situation becomes even more complex for structures without design or with old seismic criteria. Based on experiences of large earthquakes in the past in the world and different studies carried out on this phenomenon, it can be affirmed that if the pounding effect occurs in certain structures, it can cause serious damage to the interacting structures, even have structural collapse. Therefore, conducting its study and determining its effects is of the utmost importance to take preventive actions in a given structure. In this paper, an application of the evaluation of the pounding effect will be developed to an existing essential category hospital building, built in the 70's and located in the city of Chimbote - Peru. Using the DIANA FEA software and the ETABS software, the structural models are elaborated, including the pounding modeling, the seismic analyzes will be carried out, obtaining the structural responses on the pounding effects, which will be reviewed and interpreted.
