This research is carried out in a typical paper mill (for reasons of confidentiality its name is not indicated), where a cogeneration system with natural gas will be implemented to optimize its energy efficiency. It was determined that the current energy efficiency of the paper mill without cogeneration is 58.5% and with the cogeneration system it improves energy efficiency from 58.5% to 81%. The cogeneration system is designed and implemented based on the electric power and steam needs of the paper mill, having considered 12 design options associated with 7 gas turbines and 5 gas engines. These technologies were analyzed with the technical and economic parameters, which can be obtained by developing the energy calculations of a cogeneration system, using the software Engineering Equation Solver (EES). The best option obtained among the 12 prime engines considered is the MAN MGT 6000 gas turbine (7.800 KWe), whose parameters are: Payback 2.09 years, REE 0.59, parameter C (relation of electricity and useful heat) 0.85 and the amount of steam 4.7 Kg/s. In the financial economic analysis of the Project, considering the selected gas turbine, a NPV of $2,976,583.97 and an IRR of 19% is achieved. Finally, it is concluded that to optimize the energy efficiency of the paper mill, a cogeneration system with a MAN MGT 6000 gas turbine (7,800 KWe) must be implemented.
