The importance of the mining industry in Peru’s economic development is summed up in two facts repeated over the last two decades: first, mining represents around 9% of the national GDP and second, Peru is the world’s second largest producer of copper. Therefore, any methods that allow to optimize the different processes involved in mining in a reliable way would represent a significant contribution to national industry. In this research of professional sufficiency, the stages of the filtration process for a filter press with horizontal plates are analyzed to determine what are the variables that must be controlled in order to formulate an algorithm that enables an improvement in filter production. Analysis is focused on the feeding stage because of its importance in obtaining an adequate final product; in addition of it being the first stage in which problems occur when the slurry that enters the filters does not have the right conditions. The study begins by creating a model for the system, and then continues by processing the measured digital signals in order to reduce noise generated by the measurement instruments. Analysis and selection of the various methods available is performed, then the coefficients for the selected filter are calculated. Feasibility of implementing the resulting algorithm is tested with simulations made on data obtained from filters that are working at present time. Based on the results of these simulations, the potential benefits of implementing this algorithm are calculated in terms of filter availability hours gained.
