This work develops a system that fabricates long period grating (LPG) fibers, which are known to be efficient sensors in structural monitoring due to their low cost, noise and corrosion tolerance. CO2 focused laser is evenly applied to an optical fiber with a length period of 500um between each burning dot by using a set of holders and accurate motorized stages, all controlled from an interface in the computer. Subsequently, it is done a verification that uniform gratings were written to the fibers via microscopy for the visual inspection. The LPG fiber is then used as a deformation sensor to verify its operability. This way, it is ensured that the fibers will have enough quality to be used as deformation sensors for civil structures, e.g. dams and oil pipelines, dramatically reducing their maintenance cost.
