Temperature is the main variable to measure in glass melting furnaces, generally, thermocouples are used for this purpose. This temperature measurement technique implies the use of perforated refractory bricks to install the thermocouples, but this weakens the furnace structure, especially, in the furnace crown where the highest internal wall temperatures in the whole process are reached (1500-1600°C). Due to this, ratholes start to appear in the thermocouple blocks around three years after starting the furnace, leading to the furnace efficiency decrease, an increasing structural damage, and burned thermocouples. On the other hand, thermocouples start to shift downward their readings permanently (drifts) based on the time exposure to high temperatures. This paper evaluates the performance of the temperature measurement technique with infrared thermometer as a substitute element to thermocouples for glass container furnaces, based on the Lean Six Sigma (LSS) methodology and system identification toolboxes to validate the relationship between the two measurements, considering the disturbances induced by any element that cross the field of view of the pyrometer like flames, combustion gases, etc. In addition, technical considerations to adopt the infrared technology are included.
