The key starting point for proper metallurgical accounting is the collection of representative samples to determine the metal content and grades of the process streams for a reliable metallurgical accounting system. However, errors are an inherent part of all human activity, in the mining industry, the magnitudes of these are important due to the technological limitations of the equipment and measurement devices that are used and due to the natural variability of the mineral that is used. feeds the production process. Thus, the uncertainty in the estimation of recovery will depend on the precision of measurements of each of its components. The objective of this project is to “Propose a new recovery calculation method in order to reduce the uncertainty associated with estimating the recovery and production of an accounting system“. Taking into account the needs to be able to quantify errors in an accounting system, the project was developed with the following activities: • Review of information related to the initial metallurgical accounting of a metallurgical process that involves gravimetry, leaching and gold and silver flotation stages. • Audit and evaluation of the initial accounting system • Evaluation of the state of the sampling equipment and evaluation of sampling protocols and sample preparation. • Evaluation of uncertainty in the recovery of the initial method • Evaluation of a proposed method for estimating production and metallurgical recovery - targets of the accounting system. Presentation and discussion of results. According to the evaluation of the sampling systems and the methodology of the initial metallurgical accounting system (method used to estimate recovery and production): • It is inferred that the uncertainty for the estimation of production and recovery of precious metals (Au, Ag) is high and generates atypical and unreliable results. • Due to the difficulty of obtaining representative samples and / or performing some measurements at various sampling points, it was proposed to: Modify the estimation methodology of some measurements, implement alternate measurements and the cutters should be replaced or modified to obtain representative samples for the flow. pulp, particle size, solids concentration, etc. Since the uncertainty of the process measurements is not known, 3 cases or scenarios were used to define the nature of the measurement errors (uncertainties): • Theoretical Range: represents the minimum uncertainty value that can be obtained, it is the ideal case, in which the sampling equipment is in perfect condition, properly designed, installed and operated. • Acceptable Range: is what the industry accepts as tolerable, within economic and practical limits, although this range varies depending on the use of the information (for example, the quality requirements of a test are different for operation control than for accounting or marketing) • Critical Range: errors of this magnitude or greater generate a considerable impact in the case of using this information either for operational or accounting purposes. The results of the estimation of the uncertainty in the recovery and total production in the accounting system of the process, showed differences between the uncertainties of the Au production by the initial method and the proposed method; From this, considering that the price of gold is 1,780 USD / oz, then the uncertainty of the accounting system has decreased between 331 KUS $ to 1,399 KUS $ per month. Remember that this value is not considered a saving; but, have a production value of millions of dollars with better precision. Therefore, the following activities and changes are recommended: • Implement a proposed recovery and production estimation method that reduces the uncertainty of the accounting system targets. • Replacing or modifying installed cutters improves the reliability of extraction of a representative sample. • Evaluate and optimize the sampling protocol for the samples taken from the cutters. In general, an investment in improving the accuracy of the accounting system, based on the theory of sampling and propagation of errors, will result in sincere and more reliable production results in order to have better confidence for future decision making as an investment, earnings, etc.
