The purpose of this research work is to evaluate the capacity of P&H 4100XPC AC electric shovel by analyzing the productivity and unit operating costs, with a goal to increase production at an open pit large porphyry copper operation. The focus of the study is quantitative, and the scope of this study is correlational due to the direct relationship between the capacity of the shovels and my production. In addition, to support the scope, the study includes real-time and historical operational data of productivity and unit operating costs from an active mining operation. A statistical approach is used to compare P&H 4100XPC AC electric shovels with Caterpillar 6050 hydraulic shovels and includes two critical factors: productivity and unit operating costs. The reason for studying the above shovels in specific is because the above equipment’s are currently in the mine operating plan. The following assumptions were considered in this study: the capacities of two 6050 Shovels are equivalent to one 4100 Shovel and a period of sixteen months from April 2017 to July 2018 was considered for supporting the study. The statistical method used was a T-test statistical concept to probabilistically compare the means of both samples after the data normality analysis using the Shapiro Wilk (SW) method to verify the normal distribution of both the sample data. Through statistical analysis at 95% probability of confidence level was achieved which proved that the average productivity of a 4100XPC AC Shovel is higher than the verage productivity of the equivalents Caterpillar 6050 hydraulic shovel. And the unit production cost of the equivalents Caterpillar 6050 hydraulic shovel was higher than the cost of the Shovel 4100XPC AC. With the above results, it was concluded that the optimal strategy for the mine is to increase mine production, considering technical and economic benefit, by replacing the two 6050 Shovels with one 4100XPC AC Shovel. It is important to highlight that, one limitation with this study, is that the Komatsu 4100XPC AC shovel type used in evaluations, was because in the company, where the study was performed, this equipment was part of its fleet. However, for other use cases in which it is desired to evaluate other types of shovels, a similar approach and strategy can be used for analysis.
