In Peru, the national interconnected electrical system has many substations distributed throughout Peru, which allow supplying electricity to the population, to basic services such as medical centers, municipalities, and local industries. It means the electrical power supply must be completely reliable and safe, so the service and production processes do not stop. Reliability in the electrical power supply is achieved through coordinated protection schemes that allow rapid detection / correction of faults and with a control system that can optimize response times for the replacement of the electrical supply. In this report, the modernization of an electrical substation in 138kV is proposed, through the design and implementation of a digital control system based on the IEC 61850 standard. This standard specifies the so-called process bus that allows the use of data networks for control, supervision, and protection of all the power equipment that is part of an electrical substation, as well as the optimization of response times for the replacement of the electrical supply due to an electrical failure.
