Cetyl alcohol is a solid 16-carbon alcohol used in different industries as an additive in personal care products such as lotions and skin creams. Its natural source is whales, which for their extraction requires their sacrifice. To avoid this, it has been proposed to obtain it from the catalytic hydrogenation of the methyl palmitate oil extracted from palm oil. In this work, the study of ruthenium-nickel catalysts in the hydrogenation of methyl palmitate was carried out. The use of the noble metal is intended to obtain hydrogenating centers, while the use of nickel as a catalytic promoter sought to improve the selectivity to cetyl alcohol, in addition to being a relatively cheap metal. The catalysts supported in γ-Al2O3 were prepared by the coprecipitation-adsorption method at pH = 8, the precipitate formed was dried at 80 ° C and activated in H2 flow at 300 ° C, for 3 h. To carry out the hydrogenation reaction, a methyl palmitate standard was used as the reaction substrate dissolved in dodecane and 200 mg of catalyst. The catalytic hydrogenation reaction of methyl palmitate was carried out in a 260 °C batch reactor, 800 PSI of H2 and 800 rpm of stirring. The reaction time in most catalysts was 15 h, taking samples from the reactor every 2 h and analyzing them by gas chromatography to evaluate the conversion and selectivity to cetyl alcohol during the reaction time. The effects analyzed in the conversion and selectivity to cetyl alcohol were: the molar ratio of the metals in the catalyst, and the Ni promoting effect on the selectivity to cetyl alcohol, the modification of the reaction temperature from 260 to 220 °C and the method of catalyst synthesis by precipitation compared to wet impregnation. The conversion and selectivity curve of the Ru/Al supported monometallic catalyst synthesized by precipitation showed a high conversion close to 95% palmitate;however, a selectivity of less than 1% cetyl alcohol. The introduction of Ni into the Ru-Ni system dramatically increased selectivity to cetyl alcohol as shown by the supported 4%Ru2Ni1/Al_CI bimetal catalyst prepared by wet impregnation which reached a selectivity of 15%, possibly due to the interaction between Ru0 and the nickel species with the support, as shown by the TPR profile, the formation of acidic species of intermediate force and the formation of reducible species on the catalyst surface evidenced by the ease of hydrogen adsorption.
