In this work, various ways of increasing the capacitance of planar capacitors are presented, focusing on their geometry and materials with the intention of improving graphene-based sensors. In the first part, different constructions of planar capacitors with different electrode materials are shown: aluminum, copper and reduced graphene oxide (r-GO). Different dielectric materials are also studied and tested. Properties of these planar capacitor are measured and compared. In the second part, finite element simulations are done in COMSOL Multiphysics and a model is created to predict planar capacitors characteristics. Finally, r-GO electrodes are characterized by spectroscopic and microscopic techniques. Additionally, applications for improved graphene-based capacitor sensors are shown.
