In this document, Antipodal Vivaldi antennas with enhanced directivity using Anisotropic Zero Index Metamaterial (AZIM) are designed and analyzed. These antennas are needed in order to implement a compact small Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR) that operates at 3.35 GHz. The main goal is to enhance the antenna’s directivity using metamaterials (AZIM) with the Antipodal Vivaldi antenna with a size shorter than three times the wavelength at the operational frequency), which is a typical size in many publications. In this way, an state of art in Vivaldi antennas and metamaterials is developed focusing in topics related to gain improvement and miniaturization. Then, a comparison between three prototypes of antennas where AZIM were embedded is developed in order to identify a suitable prototype to be fabricated. Finally, the antenna’s parameters are measured using an anechoic chamber and a vector analyzer to be compared with simulation results.
