The treatment efficiency of the effluent of an upflow anaerobic sludge blanket reactor (UASB) by a rotating biological contactor (CBR) that used polyurethane sponges as a support medium was evaluated for a period of 36 weeks. The CBR consisted of two stages connected in series. Treatment efficiency was evaluated at different operating conditions, the first one was at a flow rate of 199 L/día, hydraulic retention time (HRT) of 10.86h and an average organic loading rate (OLR) of 6.11 gDBO5/m2/day during a period of 22 weeks; the second one at a flow rate of 397 L/día, HRT of 5.42 h and OLR of 26.40gDBO5/m2/day for 3 weeks; and finally the third one at a flow rate of 242 L/día, HRT of 8.92h and OLR of 11.39gDBO5/m2/day for 11 weeks. The system proved to have an average efficiency greater than 89% in terms of removal of total BOD5, soluble BOD5 and Fecal Coliforms (FC) in all the evaluated operating conditions. Regarding for the operation at 199 L/día an efficiency of 92.47% for total BOD5, 93.71% for soluble BOD5 and 99.13% or 2.78 logarithmic units removed (UL) for CF. For operation in the short period at 397 L/día an efficiency of 93.17% in terms of total BOD5, 92.21% in terms of soluble BOD5 and 96.86% or 1.59 logarithmic units removed (UL) in terms of FC. Finally, for the operation at 242 L/día, an efficiency of 89.38% in terms of total BOD5, 93.22% in terms of soluble BOD5 and 95.74% or 1.58 logarithmic units removed (UL) in terms of FC.
