This research consists of determining the efficiencies of two slow filters using anthracite and zeolite as filter media, which have certain properties for the purification of wastewater, using the effluent from the UASB reactor of the Center for Research and Treatment of Wastewater and Waste. Dangerous of the Faculty of Environmental Engineering of the National University of Engineering (CITRAR- FIA-UNI). For this, it was necessary to carry out the characterization of the granular materials before carrying out the entire process. In the granulometric analysis of anthracite and zeolite, various sizes were found between 5 mm and 0.10 mm. During the analysis of the filtering materials, it was found that the zeolite reaches an approximate porosity of 52% and the anthracite 41%, the zeolite being more porous, which facilitates the retention of microorganisms present in wastewater. The installation of the module was carried out at CITRAR-FIA-UNI, after which the hydraulic test and start-up were carried out. The experimental procedure was based on making 3 filtration runs with different filtration rates, these were 0.0227 m3 / m2.h, 0.0151 m3 / m2.h and 0.0075 m3 / m2.h. It was observed that the efficiency of both filters (zeolite and anthracite) increased while the filtration rate was reduced, where the highest efficiency was achieved with a rate of 0.0075 m3 / m2.h. The measurement of the physicochemical parameters was carried out to be able to carry out the control in the development of the filtration process, as well as the evaluation in the removal of the BOD5, solids and coliforms. The zeolite was able to remove up to 92.90% of the BOD5 compared to the anthracite, which reached 85.92%, in addition the removal of solids was favorable for the case of the zeolite with 93% approximately compared to the anthracite which had about 88% efficiency. Regarding thermotolerant coliforms, zeolite reached an efficiency of 66.17% compared to anthracite, which achieved an efficiency of 59.65%. The analyzes were carried out in the FIA-UNI laboratory and in the CITRAR-FIA-UNI laboratory.
