This research thesis was carried out at the CITRAR-FIA-UNI facilities in order to study the effect of hydraulic load and the combination of substrates with different thicknesses in the reduction of organic matter and nutrients in constructed subsurface flow wetlands vertical, for this, two artificial wetlands of 1.00m x 1.00m on each side were built with a depth of 1.00m, considering the height of the granular medium of 0.75m and a free edge of 0.25m; the composition of the granular medium of wetland H-1 was 0.20m of coarse sand. 0.40m medium gravel and 0.15m of coarse gravel (crushed stone) and in the case of the H-2 wetland it was 0.40m of coarse sand. 0.20m medium gravel and 0.15m coarse gravel (crushed stone). The macrophyte sown in both wetlands was cyperus alternifolius. The experimental evaluation process of the research system had a duration of 32 weeks, where 4 hydraulic loads of 0.2m3/m2x12hours, 0.3m3/m2x12hours, 0.4m3/m2x12hours and 0.6m3/m2x12hours respectively were evaluated, the evaluation was carried out in a ascending and each evaluation stage had a duration of 4 weeks, in each evaluation stage the efficiency of wetland reduction was evaluated to remove the Biochemical Oxygen Demand, Chemical Oxygen Demand, Total Suspended Solids, Ammoniacal Nitrogen, Nitrites, Nitrates , Total Nitrogen, Total Phosphorus and Thermotolerant Coliforms and the daily behavior of the basic parameters such as ambient temperature, residual water temperature, turbidity, pH, conductivity, dissolved oxygen, relative humidity and the growth of vegetables. From the results, it was evidenced that the highest efficiencies for the reduction of organic matter and ammoniacal nitrogen were in stage 1 evaluated with a hydraulic head 0.2m3/m2x12hours for wetlands H-1 and H-2, having average values of 95.26%, 81.49%, 84.31% and 90.55% for the H-1 wetland and 97.35%, 86.61%, 88.56% and 96.06% for the H-2 wetland of the parameters of BOD5, COD, SST, ammonia nitrogen respectively. On the other hand, the highest efficiencies for reducing total nitrogen, thermotolerant coliforms and total phosphorus were found in stage 2 evaluated for a hydraulic load of 0.3m3/m2x12hours, having average values of the entire stage of 27.00%, 99.55% and 23.46 % for the H-1 wetland and 25.40%, 99.96% and 20.37% for the H-2 wetland respectively for the mentioned parameters. Taking into account the composition of the granular medium of each evaluated wetland, it was shown that the H-2 wetland presented better reduction efficiencies than the H-1 wetland for the evaluated parameters of BOD5, COD, TSS, ammonia nitrogen, nitrites, total iron , thermotolerant coliforms and a greater increase in the concentration of nitrates in all the stages that were evaluated, otherwise it was observed in the evaluation of the parameter of total nitrogen and total phosphorus, where the H-1 wetland presented better reduction efficiencies compared to the wetland H-2.
