Cahua’s Hydropower Plant (Cahua HPP) is operated remotely from the control room ubicated in Lima, Peru. Cahua HPP is a run-of-river hydropower plant with a capacity of 44 MW, and due to that it hasn’t any operator in site it’s important to guarantee the water level of the forebay within the safety operation limits in a reliable way. Therefore, the objective of this research work is designing a water level controller to maintain a minimum and constant value. The designed controller is of the type proportional-integral (PI) and can be implemented in the actual control system of the Cahua HPP because its controllers support this kind of control blocks in their programming capacity. We started from the dynamic model of the Cahua HPP, specifically the grouping regulator-turbine-generator and forebay, whose parameters were obtained from the datasheets of each equipment or subsystem. The PI controller was designed, and it was added to the Cahua HPP model, being the control signal equal to the power generated by the turbines, which is proportional to the turbinated flow. The input of the model is the water level setpoint in the forebay. The output of the model is the water level of the forebay. For simulation purposes, it was implemented and input representing the water flow entering the forebay. The simulations and tuning of the PI controller were made with the toolbox PID Tuning of the software Matlab – Simulink®. Were simulated some scenarios and with different controller adjustments, to select those one that had better performance according to the requirements of the water level operation of the forebay. The results of the simulations were graphed and analyzed. It was obtained good results within expected and the feasibility of implementing an automatic water level control in the Cahua HPP forebay is checked
