This thesis is fully developed within the context of the Proyecto Modernización de la Refinería de Talara, specifically in the welding processes for the transport of liquids and gases that are essential for the refining of petroleum and its derivatives. The objective is to elaborate and develop through technical regulations, the qualification of specific welding procedures (WPS), supported with a PQR qualification, under the requirements of the ASME B31.3 (Process Piping) code in ASTM A335 Gr. P11, ASTM A312 and ASTM A53 Gr. B, which guarantee a high quality weld, in order for them to operate efficiently, safely and that is manifested in the preservation of human lives, the environment, equipment and facilities. Chapter I establishes the application codes ASME B31.3 and ASME BPVC Section IX, as design regulations and their respective scopes for the preparation and qualification of welding procedures, as well as a brief description of the referential background, the approach to the problematic reality and finally the establishment of the general and specific objectives under which the qualification procedures of the materials described for the development of this thesis will be developed. Chapter II develops the theoretical framework in wich the materials and constituents of carbon steels and alloyed steels used in pipes for the different refinery processes are described, which determine an essential variable for the welding procedure. Likewise, its main physical properties and the different destructive tests used to determine its specific characteristics are described. Finally, the Non-Destructive Tests (NDT) applicable to determine the health of the materials are described. Chapter III describes the SMAW and GTAW welding processes are based, involved in the development of this thesis for the qualification of welding procedures, as well as the input materials and equipment used in each process, in the same way the advantages and limitations of each one. Chapter V describes the experimental procedure followed for the elaboration and qualification of the 03 welding procedures (WPS), using the ASME section IX and ASME B31.3 codes as a guide and starting point for the identification of the essential and non-essential variables in the elaboration of each procedure. Finally, the qualification phase is described, where the number of required welding coupons was found, as well as the number of specimens for each test to be applied. In Chapter VI the mechanical tests are included and the results obtained by each welding procedure and executed according to the ASME Section IX code are analyzed, concluding that the qualified welding procedures, the reason for this thesis, are recommended for their application in the manufacture of the pipelines for the modernization project of the Talara refinery, since they guarantee reliability and assurance in a finished product with optimum quality due to their technological demands and are the basic documentation that governs and guides the welding practice.
