In the present investigation, a quantitative and qualitative analysis of the components of high spare parts costs and high failure rate was carried out. This investigation was developed and executed throughout 2016 at the Cajamarquilla refinery with the target to reduce the high maintenance costs recorded in 2015. In view of this situation, a Pareto analysis of the systems, subsystems and components of the number of faults and the costs of the spare parts was started, finding as results the expansion joints for pumps. As a solution to the problem, the root cause analysis of faults was carried out (qualitative technique); and, then, using the historical data of three consecutive years, a statistical analysis of reliability (quantitative technique) was carried out in order to locate at which stage of the curve of the bathtub the component is located and what would be the root causes of failures potential Finally, the scheduling process was proceed, the proposed action plans were executed and the results were measured, obtaining a significant reduction in spare parts costs in expansion joints, as well as the number of failures.
