Refineries are industrial plants in the energy sector that are designed for the refining of crude oil or concentrated mineral, the piping systems are a fundamental part of these industries, whose purpose is to transfer the fluids between the process units. In general, refinery pipes are designed for a life time of thirty years, however, in the world most industries continue to operate after reaching this period, generating additional economic benefits at the cost of low investment and high risk. system failure. From the engineering point of view, the need to study and analyze the functionality of the piping systems that reach the design life time is determined, due to the high risk of failure they represent; Consequently, by way of prevention, it was proposed as an objective of the investigation to determine the maximum allowable wear that the pipe can experience over the years to guarantee that the system did not fail due to pressure, thermal expansion and occasional loads. The development of the research describes the analysis of flexibility and efforts of the piping system in operation of a refinery, in order to determine the parameters that were taken into account in the original design of the piping system, that is, the maximum efforts, the displacements, forces and moments acting on anchors and nozzles, the restrictions imposed on the support of the piping system and the determination of the most vulnerable lines. Subsequently, the calculation of the minimum thickness required in the piping system is made taking into account the stresses generated by pressure and by combination of loads according to the ASME B31.3 code. The minimum thicknesses required for the piping system are compared with the actual thicknesses obtained in the refinery piping system, thus concluding whether or not the piping system should continue in operation. Also, with the help of the theoretical rate of loss of thickness due to corrosion and oxidation, the remaining life time is determined.
