Lima is a densely populated city and its in sewerage infrastructure has more than 50 years and the pipes require replacement for exceeding their design life. Consequently, the Sanitation Service Provider Companies must invest in sewerage rehabilitation works to reduce the operational problems of collectors, such as: obstruct, collapse, and flooding. In order to solve this problem, Perú has applied Trenchless Technology (TT) in the last years for sewerage rehabilitation works. This is a type of subsurface construction work that requires a little excavation volume and no continuous trenches, also TT minimizes restoring ground surfaces such as sidewalks and pavement; in other words, application of this technology optimizes investments and minimizes the impacts generated during the construction stage. This Thesis highlights the application of a type of trenchless technology: the Pipe Bursting method by comparing the Static versus Dynamic System (known as pneumatic). This assessment considered the construction procedures, times, costs, environmental and social impacts, in order to identify the most effective alternative. Therefore, two construction cases were evaluated under similar conditions in Lima city, applying the Static and Dynamic systems for each case. As similarities, both systems require first digging of insert pits next to the existing manholes; then, the contractor should install the fragmentation equipment in one pit and on the opposite pit, should insert new pipes. In contrast, the main difference consists in the versatility of equipment installation and accessories, as well as the effective time of fragmentation. In conclusión, the efficiency of the application of the Pipe Bursting (PB) system largely depended on the accomplishment of the preliminary and preparatory activities and it was verified that the preliminary and preparatory activities represent approximately 50% of the time of the total duration. Finally, the results showed that the Dynamic system has better cost and performance compared to the Static system, however, the pneumatic system generates a greater number of significant negative environmental impacts, due to the increase in noise and vibration levels during the fragmentation process.
