The research was carried out in the CITRAR FIA - UNI, where a modified UASB reactor was built on a real scale, with a design flow of 13.82 m3/day that in the rural area would be equivalent to approximately 231 habitants benefited (considering a provision of 60 L/inhab/day), the reactor dimensions were 1.70 m internal diameter and total height of 2.10 m (useful height = 1.60 m) with a HRT and upflow velocity of 6.3 hours and 0.25 m / h, respectively. According to the obtained results, the UASB septic tank operates efficiently as an improved settler, the removal efficiencies for turbidity, total COD, particulate COD, colloidal COD and soluble COD were, 78%, 50%, 63%, 52% and 21%, respectively. If the results of the particulate COD and the soluble COD are observed in the effluent, it can be seen that it operated as a settler of particulate material, that is, that the biological activity was not as expected compared to its advanced technology (UASB reactors) The start-up period was set at 149 days under the operating conditions during the time the research lasted, then the reactor showed better stability in its removal efficiencies of the turbidity, total COD, particulate COD and colloidal COD, but it is not soluble COD. The anaerobic sludge from the UASB reactor of the CITRAR FIA-UNI was used as an inoculation source. During the research no significant growth of sludge was observed inside the modified UASB reactor. When measuring the produced methane, no direct relationship was found between the methane volumes and soluble COD.
