In mining, the main production processes are: extraction, processing, smelting and refining. These production processes demand a consumption of electrical energy directly proportional to the processing capacity of each mining unit. To supply this energy to all the installed equipment, there are electrical substations and control centers that require operators to ensure the continuity of the electrical supply by executing different actions in response to frequent events in a mining unit. The purpose of this professional proficiency work is to design an automation system for mining electrical substations based on a SCADA data acquisition and control system. For this, electrical substations larger than 4.16kV of a medium-sized mining unit were identified and relevant field information was gathered from the smart electronic devices of each substation. System designs includes the development of a communication architecture with the capacity to functionally integrate devices, considering technical and economic aspects; as well as the development of the graphical interface that allows the electrical operator to visualize the data in real time of the entire electrical system, obtaining automatic records of historical data and executing predetermined actions. Finally, it is concluded that the main advantage of using a SCADA system is that by improving response times of electric operators facing frequent events, the availability of electricity supply throughout the mining unit is also improved, which is reflected in higher production
