The objective of the thesis is to improve the mechanical properties of D3 steel through heat treatment of quenching and tempering. For tempering, the steel was heated to temperatures of 960, 990 and 1200 ºC, subsequently cooling the specimen in water, and temperatures of 200, 300 and 400 ºC were used for tempering, with two temperings lasting one hour each. Different results were obtained in the maximum tensile strength, yield stress, Rockwell C Hardness, and the impact test. Likewise, metallography was performed in each case. Also, an analysis of the deformations has been carried out using the material characterization technique. From the aforementioned, this thesis proposes an adequate slow heating thermal treatment with two intermediate preheats at 400 ° C and 800 ° C, each lasting 30 minutes, taking into account that the thermal conductivity of steel is lower at low temperatures. temperatures, so that heating causes thermal stresses that increase the danger of deformation and cracking of the parts. Also, a residence time of 120 minutes is proposed at the austenitization temperature and a cooling to 0 ° C, to favor the passage into solution of the secondary carbides present in the microstructure, followed by simple tempering to transform the retained austenite into martensite and double tempered to transform martensite into tempered martensite. Finally, to reduce these internal stresses during heating, slow heating and two preheating at 400 ° C and 800 ° C are proposed.
