Peru is going through a serious reading crisis, currently an average Peruvian reads less than one book a year. Given this, specialist affirm the need to strengthen our precarious networks of libraries with the creation of the new regional libraries the allow connecting the municipal libraries with the National Library. The selected project is part of the 4 libraries that a city of this scale needs, one for each sector. The “New Public Library in Lima Center“ will have 600 reading points and a useful area of approximately 8000 m2, whose location enters Av. Nicolás de Piérola, Jr. Contumazá and Jr. Lampa follows the guidelines set forth by the “Plan for the Historic Center of Lima to 2035”. Finally, the architectural object is defined from four project strategies. The first is a placement strategy whose purpose is to insert a contemporary structure in the historic center, the second the second strategy aims to take the latest reflections on the new social and cultural role of the new libraries, whose success is in displacing the center of the In the interest of the collections to the user, the third strategy introduces the architectural concept of time and the last one proposes a design device that allows solving the acoustic, lighting and visual needs of the library. The end result is a public library according to the needs of our time, respectful of the past but expressing its own time and being carried out with integrity and without pastiche.
