Water quality is threatened by the presence of organic and inorganic chemical agents. The contamination of water by heavy metals coming mainly from anthropogenic activity represents a latent problem due to its toxicity for different life forms. The state of valence (VI) translates into the most dangerous and polluting danger due to its great oxidizing power. It is known that hexavalent chromium causes serious health problems, is carcinogenic and mutagenic so exposure should be limited and its concentration in water is limited to values below 0.05 mg / L (World Health Organization, 1996). Currently there are conventional metal removal / recovery technologies in aqueous media but they are inefficient and expensive when metal concentration is very low (<10ppm). One of the alternative treatments is biosorption, which allows the uptake of metal ions on organic matter and has advantages at low cost, biodegradable nature, as well as being a sustainable and renewable source. The purpose of this research work is to evaluate the chicken feathers as a natural adsorbent and to show their potential application in the remediation of aquatic environments and the treatment of effluents. The adsorption capacities of the treated (with NaOH) and untreated (natural) chicken feathers in a solution of potassium dichromate (K2Cr2O7) containing hexavalent chromium as an anionic compound, CrO42-have been evaluated. In the experimental tests it was observed that the adsorption of the metal on the feathers surface was sensitive to pH change, amount of sorbent and contact time between sorbent and sorbate. This phenomenon of metal uptake obeys to the physicochemical mechanisms like electrification of the interface and chemical bonds between certain functional groups of organic matter with metal.
