The use of LRB seismic insulators for bridges of continuous sections, is a very competitive alternative compared to the use of RB insulators and seismic stops, since it allows to reduce seismic demands (in the substructure), reducing structural damage and additionally also reduces the accelerations that the occupants perceive it, making the structures much safer. From a previous design, called for this research work as a “bridge of the base design”, the influence of modifying the number of continuous sections (from five to two), using LRB or RB insulators, is studied. With this study, some of the advantages and / or disadvantages of using one of these two types of insulators are revealed. Finally, the costs resulting from the analysis and design of several cases studied are compared, finding that the cost of the bridge with LRB insulators is slightly higher than the cost of the bridge with RB insulators.
