The present investigates the relationship of increased availability, based on the improvement of preventive maintenance management, which directly encompasses the reliability and maintainability of critical equipment in the micronization process of calcium carbonate. The starting point of all maintenance management is to identify the criticality of the equipment in the overall production process, determine the mode, cause and mechanism of failure, for which it is very important to define the function or operational task of each equipment. In order to achieve these objectives, the statistical analysis was carried out, prior to the improvement proposal and subsequent to it, in this way to evaluate the reduction of failure events of critical equipment, which led to improved availability, based on an increase of the reliability (MTBF) and maintainability (MTTR) of the micronization process, generated by improvements in the management of preventive maintenance. The methodology used for this is the analysis of continuous variable, by the linear regression method, supported by the Weibull trend, since it is in a period of wear (>1), for which the failure rate is variable. The results show that, if you have high reliability, availability is assured, but if you have high availability not necessarily, the opposite happens; hence the importance that the factors of which availability is composed are transcendent in its results.
