This research represents the study of the evaluation of occupational exposure to respirable dust and crystalline silica, in its three forms (quartz, cristobalite and tridamite), carried out during the year 2018, in the chopping and scarifying works during the execution of the first office building built under the “Top-down“ method, which allows simultaneous construction of basements and upper floors. The main objective of the present study was to determine the level of risk of exposure to respirable dust and crystalline silica in the mentioned works, since this new construction alternative demands more time in this task and creates a closed environment where exposure to dust may exceed allowable limits. This environment had a general ventilation system. The outstanding population for chopping and scarifying was 3 operators, for which in total 7 samples were collected that were analyzed under the NIOSH 0600 methodology for respirable dust and NIOSH 7500 for crystalline silica. It was processed the data statistically getting the profile of exposure of each GES represented by the Upper Limit of Confidence (UCL) of the arithmetic mean with a confidence level of 95% and the results were interpreted. Of the respirable dust, of the 7 samples taken 100% exceeded the maximum permissible limit. The exposure profile was 9,778 mg/m3 thus confirming that the level of risk from exposure to respirable dust is high since it exceeds 4.18 times the maximum permissible limit corrected (2.34 mg/m3). Of the crystalline silica - quartz, the 7 samples exceeded the maximum allowable limit. The exposure profile was 1.09 mg/m3. The risk level for exposure to crystalline silica (quartz) is high since it exceeds 27.9 times the maximum permissible limit corrected (0.039 mg/m3). Of the crystalline silica - cristobalite, of the 7 samples taken 100% exceeded the maximum permissible limit. The exposure profile was 0.289 mg/m3. The risk level for exposure to crystalline silica (cristobalite) is high since it exceeds 7.4 times the maximum permissible limit corrected (0.039 mg/m3). Of the crystalline silica - tridymite, of the 7 samples taken, 29% exceeded the maximum allowable limit and the remaining (71%) are above the action level. The exposure to crystalline silica (tridymite) was 0.052 mg/m3, confirming that the risk level is high since it exceeds 1.33 times the maximum permissible limit corrected (0.039 mg/m3). In the end, recommendations are given in order to minimize the level of risk found, thus ensuring the prevention of diseases caused by these occupational agents.
