According to the philosophy of seismic design of buildings, buildings must be design to keep the life of the inhabitants safe. However, the seismic design of essential buildings such as health centers, as well as buildings that could be used as shelters in case of disaster, must ensure that those buildings remain operational and functional post disaster. For this reason, it is necessary to protect seismically the structure. To do so, many technologies have been developed and implemented throughout the world, one of them is the seismic isolation system of structures. The aim of this research is to study the behavior of seismic isolation system and its interaction with the structure. To accomplish this, it is proposed to study experimentally the shear modulus of rubber and to verify the effectiveness of the seismic isolation system through a shaking table test. From the experimental results, dependency of shear modulus of rubber respect to the shear strain deformation was verified. Moreover, the effectiveness of seismic isolation system was verified on a model subjected to different levels of vibration frequencies, obtaining an increment in the vibration natural period and damping respect to the fix base model. On the other hand, the proposed bilinear model, gave a good match with respect to the experimental hysteretic curves with an error less than 10%. Finally, a proposal for a design procedure of base isolated buildings in Peru is presented in this study. This procedure is based on the recommendation of CIB (International Council for Research and Innovation in Building and Construction), using the preliminary design procedure for seismically isolated buildings (CW2012) and taking into consideration the Peruvian seismic code NTE E.030-2018.
