Aggregates constitute one of the fundamental inputs in manufacturing of concrete and variations in its quality (shape, size, texture and mineralogical composition) greatly affect the properties of fresh and hardened concrete. The present investigation is oriented to evaluate these properties using aggregates from the quarries of the city of San Marcos – Cajamarca, in order to ensure the manufacture of a good quality concrete and propose the use of these materials in civil infrastructure works for benefit of the region. With this purpose, several field visits were made with the purpose of making a recognizing of the area and identify the source of Stone materials, finding Huayobamba and Chiclayito quarries as the object of study for selection of materials. From this quarries representative samples were taken to the FIGMMUNI petrography laboratories, LEM – UNI laboratory Nº1 and FIC-UNI Chemistry laboratory, where the respective tests were performed to identify and record the chemical and physical chemical characteristics of the aggregates, to ensure the reliability of the results. From these tests it was possible to identify at a macroscopic level, that the petrographic characteristics between the two quarries are similar and there are no reactive aggregates or quantities that endanger the durability of concrete. Besides it was verified that by having similar stone characteristics, the physical characteristics of the materials, as well as the shape, texture and density, they determine the behavior and final properties of the concrete in its fresh and hardened state. Finally, this experimental study has allowed to establish a test methodology for the rapid identification of the origin of the reactivity, the types of reaction and the possible tools available for its detection. It also seeks to provide information on the selection of a quarry, with the aim of giving definitions and criteria that serve as a starting point in the exploitation of a quarry to assess its quality and power.
