The portable X-ray fluorescence (pXRF) equipment represents a low-cost technological alternative which allows obtaining the concentration of metals and metalloids in soils in a short time, without generating hazardous waste, as in the case of the ICP-MS or ICP-OES analysis. However, the results of the pXRF equipment may present errors due to chemical-matrix effects causing interelement interferences, moisture content and physical-matrix effects, such as particle size, homogeneity, and surface conditions. This thesis determines the validity and reliability of the results of portable X-ray fluorescence equipment (pXRF), applied in soils samples of the National University of Engineering (UNI). About 108 soil samples of the university campus were analyzed and distributed in 3 sectors: sector A, where tailings were disposed, sector B, area around the tailings and parks, and sector C, where was determined the background level. These 108 samples were analyzed by the pXRF equipment and 60 of them, by inductively coupled plasma atomic emission spectrometry (ICP-MS). The criteria of the United States Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) were applied to determine the quality of data provided by the pXRF equipment; obtaining definitive level results “Q3“ for Cu (<200 mg/kg), As (<120 mg/kg) and Ag, quantitative level results “Q2“ for Cr, Cu (> 200 mg/kg), Zn, As (> 120 mg/kg), Se, Mo, Cd, Sn, Sb and Pb; and qualitative results “Q1” for the Hg. To conclude, the pXRF equipment provided valid and reliable results for 11 elements studied (Cu, As, Ag, Cr, Zn, Se, Mo, Cd, Sn, Sb, and Pb). On the other hand, it was found that samples from sector A with high concentrations of Cu, Zn, As, Se, Mo, Ag, Cd, Sn, Sb, Hg and Pb which exceeded background levels; in addition, it was found As and Pb concentrations which exceeded the environmental quality standards (ECA) for soils of Peru, in 39 and 57 samples of park soils, respectively.
