The objective of the present investigation was to treat the effluent of an UASB by using recycled crushed rubber as a packing media in a trickling filter system. The system consisted of an equalization basin, followed by a pressure regulating tank, a distribution system, two percolating filter columns and two settling tanks. Each trickling filter column consisted of crushed rubber with an average size of 1/4“ and 1/2“, respectively. The investigation included all the seasons and was run for 45 weeks; of which in the last 27 weeks that included the autumn, winter and spring seasons, the system evaluation stage was carried out. Both percolating filter columns worked with an average flow rate of 1 mL/s, at an average temperature of 20.44 °C, and were classified as a high load percolator filter due to their hydraulic loading rate and very high load due to their volumetric organic loading rate; that is why their removal efficiencies were between 65-85% BOD. The average removal efficiency of BOD5 was 66% and 80% for the T.F. 1/4“ and 1/2“, respectively. The reduction of fecal coliforms was reduced from 4.82x107 to 1.5x106 and 3.7x105 for the T.F. of 1/4“ and 1/2“, respectively. Moreover, the T.F. of 1/2“ obtained removal efficiencies of 64% COD, 91% turbidity, 73% TSS, 8% conductivity and 58% ammonia nitrogen at a pH of 7.23 and with a DO at 6.36 mg/L. On the other hand, the T.F. of 1/4“ obtained removal efficiencies of 49% COD, 59% turbidity, 49% SST, 3% conductivity and 3% Ammonia Nitrogen at a pH of 7.38 and with a DO at 4.55 mg/L. With these results, it was concluded that the highest removal efficiency was recorded for the T.F. of 1/2“, since the T.F. of 1/4“ was obstructed by the low porosity that the column presents. In addition, the rubber presented suitable characteristics as resistivity, durability and low cost to be used in trickling filters in rural areas.
