In the present investigation the evaluation of the interaction between the copper slag and the cohesive soil is carried out as an alternative to stabilize sub grades with low support capacity (CBR value less than 3%). The samples of cohesive soils were extracted from the access road to the town of Shicuy, San Juan de Jarpa district, Chupaca province, Junín department that makes 3 test pits of 1.5 meters. The copper slag was extracted from the relay deposit of the DOE RUN refinery located in La Oroya, with the purpose of determining if the mixture with the cohesive raise the value of CBR and can be used as an improved subgrade. Through the laboratory tests, the mixtures of the copper slag with the cohesive soil show improvements in the value of the CBR, the results of the mixture of 60% natural soil and 40% of copper slag raise the value of CBR to 17% according to the MTC named as good subgrade, with this value was obtained a thickness of the layer of pavement as an affirmed of 15 cm, making the costs of pavement construction reduce in a 20%. In addition, 70% natural soil, 27% copper slag and 3% cement were mixed and increased the CBR value to 23.7%, which is considered a very good subgrade. Also it reduces the expansion of cohesive soil from 3.6% to 0.6%. The use of the copper slag reduces the environmental impact of the DOE RUN refinery. Also it gives an alternative use and at the same time takes advantage of its resistant properties.
