The work that has been carried out under the title “Analysis of the feasibility of reusing cobalt bunkers 60 for Helical Tomotherapy in radiotherapy centers“ is in the field of Medical Physics, the scope of this study is practical, ie, is an applied research with a quantitative approach. The starting point of the research is to propose that the requirements are met, both, the national regulations and manufacturer's requirements, as well as international recommendations regarding the dose restrictions, which will make feasible the reuse of a cobalt 60 bunker for the installation and operation of a Helicoidal Tomotherapy equipment. To demonstrate the validity of the hypothesis, two software have been developed which will be used as analysis instruments. A software to evaluate the fulfillment of the requirements of the manufacturer regarding the minimum necessary physical space of the bunker for cobalt 60, which allows us to determine if the installation of a helical tomotherapy equipment in the bunker is viable, has also been developed software for the calculation of bunker shielding for helical tomography equipment, which allows us to recalculate the cobalt 60 bunker shielding and determine if it complies with national regulations and international recommendations regarding dosage restrictions for personnel Occupationally exposed as for the public and in case, determined shielding barrier does not comply with the adequate thickness of the thickness of the barrier, we must reinforce the shielding to make the installation and operation of a helical tomotherapy equipment viable. The bunkers of four hospitals have been analyzed using the two aforementioned softwares as analysis instruments. Two hospitals in Peru, and two hospitals abroad, a Hospital in Bolivia and other in Uganda - Africa. It is concluded that in the bunkers for teams of cobalt 60 with SSD of 100 cm and 80 cm the installation of a helical tomotherapy equipment is viable validating the hypothesis raised in the investigation and the changes that should be made are minor (for both reasons, for physical space for the entry and circulation of new equipment and for reasons of armoring), therefore, is much faster and cheaper to make these adjustments than to make a new construction. In order to develop the study proposed in the thesis, a bibliographical research has been carried out that contextualizes the topic and has consisted in reviewing publications related to the calculation of shieldings for bunkers with Tomotherapy equipment, background of similar works, as well as thesis related to the development of software for the calculation of shieldings. A fieldwork was also carried out, which consisted of gathering information with the equipment supplier and in hospitals, obtaining equipment installation manuals, plans of the current facilities, and some visits to observe the use of facilities near the bunker, current plans and future regarding implementation of additional services such as brachytherapy of high dose rate for example, circulation and occupation of environments by staff and the public, interviews with professionals and specialists of the Radiotherapy Unit to know how many patients plan to treat per day, etc. It is considered that this work may be of interest to students of Medical Physics, Medical Physicians, managers of hospitals or private clinics who have an interest in implementing radiotherapy services or who have been presented with the need to replace old equipment with new ones.
