Every day, huge masses of emission gases from many industries goes into the atmosphere, causing the unavoidable pollution of atmospheric air. One of the main industries which is responsible of this effect is transportation and its concentration in the major cities of the planet represents a major public health problem, which is why developed countries have enacted stricter laws to regulate emissions from the automotive industry through the permissible limits. A mechanical solution that is currently available is the catalyst in the exhaust system that catches certain polluting particles in a way that reduces the polluting potential of the exhaust gases. The catalyst performs optimally when the air to fuel ratio (AFR) used during combustion is maintained at its stoichiometric value. In order to align with the new laws and face the pollution problem, many investigations have been carried out in order to improve the control strategies for the AFR value in internal combustion engines. The main reason for the difficulty in implementing such a control strategy is because of the effects of the variable time delay that appear in the process and that degrade the performance of the control. This thesis proposes the use of a fuzzy controller with online auto tuning, where the auto tuning is achieved because of a second fuzzy controller. The results of the simulations show that the proposed controller can be used to control the AFR value and that it reduces the effect of the variable time delay, which depicts in an improvement of the combustion process that takes place inside the gasoline engine.
