Over the last years, numerical tools have become increasingly popular because they are able to solve complex problems more quickly and easily than other less sophisticated tools. Due to this, the user should possess the necessary knowledge to understand the main aspects related to numerical modeling. The constitutive model is a vital component of the numerical modeling of geotechnical problems because this is responsible for determining the quality of the obtained results. The soil presents a complex behavior and there is a wide variety of constitutive models, therefore, the model selection should focus on describing the problem in the most real way. This thesis is focused on the study and application of Linear Elastic, Mohr- Coulomb, Hardening Soil and HS-Small constitutive models. Each one of the mentioned models is able to reproduce the behavior of the soil with different degrees of accuracy, so that, this research has as its main objective to analyze and compare the influence of the constitutive models on the solution of typical geotechnical problems. The fundamentals of soil behavior, mechanics of continuous media and constitutive models are described as part of the research development. After that, the determination of parameters of the most representative materials was carried out through the calibration process. The reviewed constitutive models were applied to analyze the behavior of representative granular materials of different densities in two typical problems using the finite element method through PLAXIS 2D software. Finally, a comparative analysis of the results using each one of the corresponding models was carried out.
