Nowadays, the electric power produced by the effect of the turbines of flow and the combustión of natural gas represents 95% of the production of electricity in Peru; however, during the planning of the operation of the National Interconnected Electric System (NIES), models are still being used that develop detailed water management, but with a simplified representation of the availability of natural gas. The question arises what would be the level of detail that a model should consider to represent a natural gas system and how the interaction between the operation of an electrical system and natural gas should be represented. In the present thesis project, a model of optimization of the economic and integral operation of a hydrothermal and natural gas system with a level of detail superior to the current models used in Peru is developed. First of all, the evolution of the national electricity system and the main characteristics of the optimization models applied in the planning of its economic operation are reviewed. Then, the mathematical model of a natural gas system is developed and solution methods are presented applied in the optimization of its operation. Based on the exposed methodologies, the most appropriate method is selected and the model is implemented in GAMS® followed by a validation process by comparing the results obtained from applications with the model and benchmark results. Finally, the model is applied to the national system.
